The Lewis Chessmen

The Lewis Chessmen are 12th-century masterpiece carvings created in Northern Europe (likely Trondheim, Norway) and discovered in 1831 in the sand dunes of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland.

Mostly finely crafted from walrus ivory, the pieces depict kings, queens, bishops, knights, and pawns. They are best known for their vivid and expressive details—from the contemplative queen resting her cheek in her hand to the berserker biting his shield—capturing the social strata and human spirits of the Middle Ages.

As the most complete surviving medieval chess set, they stand as a testament to exquisite European craftsmanship and are celebrated highlights of both the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland.

About the Product

Among the Lewis Chessmen, the Queen is the most iconic and evocative figure. This queen sculpture presents an extraordinarily rare humanized perspective. She wears an exquisite crown and heavy, flowing medieval robes, her right arm bent with her hand gently resting against her cheek — her brow slightly furrowed, her eyes wide open, capturing a theatrical expression lost in thought, even bordering on anxiety.

This pensive "chin-resting" pose not only breaks free from the rigid conventions of medieval art, conveying the inner turmoil and genuine emotions of the nobility with striking vividness, but has also become the most recognizable visual symbol of the entire chess set. She is more than a precious epitome of ancient craftsmanship and historical heritage — through her intensely expressive artistry, she leaves contemporary viewers with endless room for imagination.

Made from durable, high-quality 12oz canvas, with a clean open-top structure that balances everyday carry with lightweight storage. The roomy bag body and natural canvas texture make it a daily item built to last.

The bag design is printed using hand screen printing (Silkscreen Printing). Each pull is done by hand, leaving the ink on the canvas with a crisp yet subtly hand-crafted texture. Unlike industrial digital printing, the slight variations that occur during the silkscreen process are part of what makes each piece one of a kind.

Sizes are offered in two options:

  • Vertical, Small: 30 × 35 cm, handle drop 26cm
  • Vertical, Medium: 35 × 40 cm, handle drop 27cm

Adapting to different everyday carrying needs.

Colors are offered in a wide range, from basics to shades with visual character, so you can choose according to different designs and personal preferences.

We don't deliberately erase the subtle marks left during the making process; instead, we keep the texture shaped together by the material, the ink, and the hand — so that the design isn't just printed onto the item, but becomes part of the item itself.

From commuting and shopping to carrying books and everyday items, it is simple and practical, while leaving a little room for your own expression.
